At Sifa Fireside, we’re always looking for creative ways to engage with our clients so their voices are heard. This year, we launched an exciting collaborative photography project, ‘The Voice of Homelessness’, working with Birmingham-based arts organisation, GRAIN Projects, and acclaimed photographer Anthony Luvera.

Anthony is an artist, writer and educator who engages with social issues and has collaborated for over fifteen years with people who have experienced homelessness. His work has been documented and exhibited in galleries, museums and public spaces across the UK.

The project, based at the SIFA Fireside’s Drop In centre, is the first time Anthony has worked in Birmingham, and the work emphasises the importance of self representation and self expression among marginalised individuals. It aims to make visible those who are homeless in the city and support their confidence building.

Using photography to establish areas of interest, Anthony has been collaborating with some of the most vulnerable members of our society, building relationships and enhancing self-esteem by providing tools for self-expression and communication.

With a range of practical workshops, he’s also been teaching photo editing and the basics of social media, key to developing social integration skills to engage with support networks.

Creating this new body of work with our clients has enabled participants to use photography to express the things they are interested in and present their points of view.

It also demonstrates the importance of photography in documenting people’s lives, in forging memory and as an aid to telling life stories.

Following a break in the project due to social distancing, we plan to regain momentum very soon. We’re really excited to see the finished product, which will see ‘The Voice of Homelessness’ exhibited and published in 2021.

Thank you to our partner, GRAIN Projects and to National Lottery Awards for All, Arts Council England, Birmingham City University and Palm Labs for their invaluable support. Thank you to Galliard Homes for sponsorship.
