Who is this training aimed at?

This training is aimed at anybody working with vulnerable people or anybody who wants to gain a better understanding of how we are all affected by mental health issues

This training (which is run in two parts that can be undertaken together or separately) includes: .

Part 1:

  • Defining mental health/ mental illness
  • Mental illness and stigma
  • Mental health treatment – an historical view
  • Exploring mental health conditions – signs and symptoms
  • Mental illness and  neurochemical changes
  • Pharmacological treatment of mental illness – how the drugs work, including side effects
  • Psychodynamic explanations of mental illness
  • Impact of socio-economic factors on mental health

Part 2:

  • Mental Health Act – an overview (including advocacy)
  • Responding to a mental health ‘crisis’
  • Self-medication (drugs and alcohol) –  an attempt to  manage symptoms
  • Therapeutic and support interventions
  • Mental health and recovery
  • Maintaining maximum mental health
  • Where to access mental health support

Background Information:

We will all be affected by mental ill health at some point in our lives, directly or indirectly, at work or at home. Some population groups are at a higher risk of experiencing poor mental health due to their life history and to their exposure and vulnerability to difficult social and economic circumstances. 

This training is intended to help participants: 

  • better recognise and understand a wide range of mental health conditions
  • increase their knowledge of how the mind and the body is affected by mental ill health
  • respond better to a person in a mental health crisis
  • support people on their mental health recovery journey
  • signpost people for further advice and support
