We ran ‘Open Cinema’ at SIFA Fireside last year when 35 homeless and vulnerably-housed people were able to access a film and workshop each week of the season which gave them the opportunity to enjoy a cultural and social event together, – something most people take for granted. Over the season, this enabled friendships and social networks to grow, – an important indicator for improving mental health. Over the four film seasons, 22 people took part in workshops and a further nine clients took part directly in making a feature film with Reel Access through acting, directing, scriptwriting, scenery making, and editing. They gained skills and confidence and all participants have gone on to our Changing Lives employment support project while two are now volunteers here.
For those taking part it has reduced their risk of crime, improved their mental health and wellbeing, and for the majority if has helped their recovery from substance and alcohol misuse, and in one case gambling addiction, where structured activities and social networks are a key success factor.
Open Cinema has also helped us engage with new clients, including rough sleepers, bringing people to us through word of mouth, who we can then engage with, refer to our services and help them break the cycle of homelessness.
To enable us to offer ‘Open Cinema’ to our homeless and vulnerably housed clients, we are looking for Sponsors to enable us to pay for membership of ‘Open Cinema’, which provides the film licences and support.
Sponsors can fund a month, a season or multiple seasons (4 seasons = whole year).
Sponsorship for one month is £670; one season is £2k and £8k for a year.
We believe this project makes a difference to clients; and hope that, with your support, we can run Open Cinema during 2016 and have an impact on their lives.
