Jon is from Sweden and has been coming to SIFA Fireside since May 2015 when he was rough sleeping in Birmingham after being on the streets of London. He signed up with our Changing Lives and Creative Pathways projects as he was keen to look for employment and to keep busy with engaging in activities.
Jon attended our litter picking club and helped to deep clean the workshop unit for our Out of the Woodwork Furniture Project, which he enjoyed very much. He also attended a Geese Theatre drama session and the National Citizenship Service Student Challenge two day workshop where he told his life story and the students then turned this into a play.
Jon communicated very well with the students, telling them that he had been in a rock band in Sweden and that he hopes to create a band here in England as music is his passion.
He also attended a Domino’s Pizza recruitment workshop through Creative Pathways at SIFA Fireside and five days training at the Domino’s office. He was unsuccessful in getting employment at Domino’s but this didn’t stop him and he’s now working at a factory in Birmingham doing day shifts and very happy with his achievement.
Meanwhile he was still struggling to find accommodation but has at last been successful. This is great news as he is able to live independently and support himself. However Jon didn’t have any bedding, crockery or pots and pans, so, thanks to the BHS vouchers donated to SIFA Fireside, we were able to help him purchase these essentials, turning his house in to a home and ensuring he had a good night’s sleep and hot food before his first shift.
