Seven Days of Support

by admin on 13 April 2015

SIFA Fireside are delighted to announce that our weekend service is returning.

After the difficult to decision to end the weekend service for financial reasons was made in February 2015 our weekend volunteers took action. They were determined to get weekend openings back to ensure that Birmingham’s homeless people had somewhere to go for support, a shower and a cuppa, so they formed ‘Birmingham Teapot’, set up a Just Giving page and started fundraising!

There was a bake sale by Bournville College and a dress down day at Deutsche Bank. Then Capita donated as did the Michael Marsh Trust and an anonymous business leader.  Chief Executive Cath Gilliver then had the pleasant task of telling the Birmingham Teapot group that Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co Charitable Trust had added nearly half the funds and we were across the finish line!

Sharon Baker, leading the volunteer campaigners’ group ‘Birmingham Teapot’ said; ‘Volunteering at SIFA Fireside’s weekend drop-in is as much a part of my life as it is for the guys who use it, and I felt so upset by the thought of it closing it spurred me into action with my fellow volunteers.’

CEO Cath Gilliver says ‘SIFA Fireside provides a vital lifeline for Birmingham’s homeless people, and we rely on the support of local people and businesses to open our doors seven days a week.’

Birmingham Teapot is holding a further fundraiser with Aston University; a ‘Swishing’ clothes event on Thursday 30th April, and this will start the new fundraising target to provide the weekend service in 2016, ensuring that it isn’t lost again.

We want to thank all the individuals who have donated as well as the charitable trusts and corporate supporters, and we’re very pleased that the service is returning within such a short amount of time so that we can continue supporting Birmingham’s homeless people seven days a week.
