Having received funding from West Midlands Police (Proceeds of Crime Act) we bought the equipment and clothing required for a team of Clients, supervised by staff, to head out in Digbeth and collect any rubbish they find.
Despite the near freezing temperatures, five clients went out on Monday afternoon with Pam, Lee and Lucy (staff members) to remove litter from the neighbouring area. Ten bags of plastic bottles, cans and other litter were filled and put in bin containers. A team will be going out on a regular basis on three agreed routes to the streets immediately surrounding Allcock Street. Plans are also in place for graffiti removal, although this will require identification and discussion with building owners.
The Clients volunteer to be part of the team and named the group themselves: The Street Inter Face Action team (SIFA). These clients are long term unemployed and struggling to get back in to work; opportunities like this as well as working with our Changing Lives team on their CVs and interview techniques can help to boost their confidence and show potential employers their commitment to getting back in to a routine and in to work.
