First World War Commemoration

by admin on 1 December 2014

SIFA Fireside held a World War 1 commemoration event on the 13th November to increase awareness amongst our clients of that conflict, 100 years after it began.ww11

We worked closely with Birmingham Central Library and Crisis Skylight as well as using the skills of our own staff members and others.

The programme included displays of contemporary newspapers from the Library archive and a ‘Battlefield of the Great War’ looped film supplied by ‘Busking Bobby’, who also sang some songs of the era.

SIFA Fireside’s Lucy Hill conducted a group of clients who sang ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ and other songs from the trenches and the Crisis Skylight drama group performed readings and poetry, dressed in WW1 uniforms and from a makeshift trench.

Lunch was provided based on ingredients used during World War 1, bully beef (corned beef) and cheese and potato pie with carrots and peas.

The day ended with the last episode of the ‘Blackadder Goes Forth’ series, when Blackadder, George, Baldrick and Captain Darling go over the top and the scene fades into a present day poppy field.
