SIFA Fireside’s Outreach Alcohol Team received a referral for Adrian* who was staying at a Probation hostel in Birmingham city centre. Adrian’s last crime had been committed under the influence of alcohol which had resulted in him serving a prison sentence and only having supervised contact with his 2 year old daughter, Holly*, on leaving prison.
Adrian confided during their sessions that alcohol had played a big part in his life and it had been a major contributor to all his previous crimes, and that during his time in prison he had been through detox and now recognised that he needed to change his life for himself and for his daughter. He was worried he would give in to temptation while at the hostel and needed alcohol support, so over the next 6 sessions Adrian worked hard to recognise the triggers that led him to drink, the effects that alcohol had on his physical and mental health, and the consequences that his actions had for his family.
Adrian became determined to make changes as he didn’t want Holly to recall a childhood that involved her father drinking every day and he wanted to make her proud of him.
Due to the progress Adrian made Probation were happy for SIFA Fireside to discharge him. Both organisations feel confident that Adrian has the determination and drive to change his life for the better and avoid the risk of further re-offending once he leaves the hostel. The future looks bright
for Adrian and for Holly.
